April 2024 Good Things

A “Mustang Round-Up” of Good Things from April, courtesy of the Chugiak Yearbook staff ❤

SPIRIT WEEK IS HERE! It’s the last spirit week of the year. Be sure to dress up daily. These dress-up days do not require check-ins for spirit points and are just for fun, but we will still have the photo booth up at lunch each day this week. If staff wants to gather at 2pm each day for a group photo, we can do that too 🙂 Don’t forget that Step Down Spirit Week culminates in the Step Down Assembly after 6th hour on Friday. Please wear BLACK on Friday to the assembly.

BASEBALL BEGINS // Chugiak Baseball is off to a great start. They are playing most games in the early season at Bartlett High (that’s usually the first field clear of snow) and will move to Oberg later in the season. Photos by Chloe G.

FESTIVAL FUN // Choir scored an almost unheard of “98” at the ASD Large Schools Choral Festival. Photos by Rowan C.

BRIDGE TO THE WORLD // The Chugiak-Eagle River Bridge Festival, organized by Melissa Choinard and Laura Fenoseff, was held at CHS on April 6th. Photos by Skylar T. and Ava K.

KC, BABY! // Yearbook traveled to their first-ever National Student Press Association conference in Kansas City, Missouri, at the beginning of April. They took in numerous sessions on how to grow as a staff and make plans for after high school. They also got to watch a MLB game (Royals won!) and take a “field trip” two hour north to the Walsworth Yearbook factory, where they got to see our new book for the first time as it came off the presses. They also had a long layover in Seattle and explored Pike Place Market.

READY FOR GRADUATION // The 2024 WDS Senior Class got together on April 2nd for their class photo. They will celebrate their graduation on April 30th from 6-8 in the library with a potluck. Feel free to join for this very… unique ceremony. Photos by Micah M.

PONY GIRLS SOCCER // Girl’s Soccer is celebrating some early season success on their home field. Photos by Kelsyn B. and Skylar T.

FELICIDADES! // Spanish immersion celebrated their graduation on Friday night in the Steve Premis Auditorium. Photos by Scout B.

WDS CULTURE NIGHT // WDS went to see Aladdin the musical at the Performing Arts Center in mid-April. They started at the Anchorage Museum and had dinner catered by Bean’s Cafe’s “Motley Crew” Catering. Photos by Avian.

CHOIR CLEANS UP // North Area Choral Group killed it at their competition in LA in mid-April, bringing home several trophies and accolades. Photos by Scout Brunswick.

BOYS SOCCER KICKIN’ IT // Boys’ Soccer is officially out on the fields and enjoying the spring air during matches. Photos by Kelsyn and Caleb.

PROMMA MIA! // Prom was held on April 13th at the Chugiak gym. The Junior class student gov members, Ty, Eva, Bethany, Abigail, and Meadow lead the organization with support from the incredible dance coordinators, Tori Metzger and Ashley Bailey. Photos by Chloe G., Skylar T., and Kyra W, with support from Stud Gov freshman Reece D.

SOFTBALL STARTS // Softball had their very first games of the season this past week, with scrimmages at Loretta French and varsity doubleheaders at Albrecht fields in Anchorage. Scrimmage photos by Ava K.

STUDENT ADVISORY BOARD WRAPS UP // The final Student Advisory Board meeting of the school year was held in mid-April. A big shout out to Student Gov girlies Taylor Deschamps, Ty Quiroz, Emma Spanos, and Elise Kelly for representing Chugiak at the monthly meetings this year.

TRACK TAKES OFF // Track is currently cleaning up in Boise, but here are some photos from earlier in April by Regina P, Kyra W., Eli W., and Chloe G. The last photo was event featured on Alaska Sports network’s article on the start of track season, with photo credit to Elijah.

BAND TAKES SFO // The Chugiak Bands traveled to San Fransico for the World Strides competition right after scoring a nearly impossible “100” at the ASD Large Schools Band Festival. Photos thanks to Trombley and Camryn.

THE YEARBOOK IS HERE! // The yearbooks arrived last week and are being inventoried by the staff. But of course, they sat down to take a peek first. We can’t wait to share it with everyone on May 3. Photos by Kelsyn.

MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD // Chugiak celebrated Month of the Military Child on April 15th with a cake and kahoot celebration. Anna and Jamie even got to cut the cake with NJROTC’s ceremonial saber! Thanks to Gunny, Colonel, and Jamie for making this event happen.

DAY OF CARING 2024 // It’s finally here and finally over! WDS had an awesome time washing cars, making smoothies and fry bread, cleaning up the campus, sidewalk chalking the grounds, making care packages for Covenant House, getting CPR training from parent volunteer Lindsay Runyan, doing landscaping in the Andy Kirk Courtyard, baking cookies and making cards for Fisher House, painting rocks for and cleaning up the Christian Bohrer Memorial Garden, and so much more.

They started the day with the final cross-seminar in their year-long philosophy seminar series, “How to Live a Good Life,” by studying and seminaring on the poem “The House by the Side of the Road,” a missive about the human connection. They also celebrated their March students of the month with the customary certificate, pin, and Hot Wheels car.

During the week prior, they had a penny war to raise money for Alaska Cat Adoption Team. The junior class won the penny war and earned an ice cream party at the end of the day, with a grand total of over $200 raised.
