FRESHMEN FIRST DAY: Chugiak welcomed Freshmen-only to the first day of school on Thursday, August 15th. Photos by Regina, Abi, and Micah.

PRACTICE LIKE YOU PLAY: Some early-season practice shots by yearbook staffers reviewing camera settings.

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT: We welcomed families to CHS on Thursday night. Photos by Conlan, Nym, and Kailyn F.

GOOD CATS OF THE WEEK: Yearbook celebrates “Good Cat” and “Bad Cat” of the week to encourage staff members to achieve more. Our “Good Cats” this week were Conlan and Kailyn, for covering their first events as photographers and getting photos uploaded same night. Our “Bad Cat” of the week is Checking Our Phones in Class. It’s a thing we’re already working on!

CHU-CHU-CHUGIAK: Football is off to a strong start, with a W over Wasilla during week one and a touchdown in a 41-7 loss against constant state champions Soldotna during week two. Photos by Regina, Abi, Chloe, Camryn, and Skylar.

GREEN FLAGS: Chugiak Flag Football has a full Varisty and JV roster this year and is looking good on the field. Photos by Bella and Regina.

THE FIRST ONES: WDS, Indigenous, and social studies students got to participate in a presentation by guest elders from the Chugachimute Consortium last week, in which we learned the origins of how Chugiak got its name– supposedly, when the Russians asked the people of Kodiak Island what this area was called, they said “Chugach,” which means “they were here first.” Chugiak is a syntax translation of that into the local dialect. Photos by Caleb.

RUN (through the) FOREST, RUN!: XC boys and girls competed in the ERHS 3K last weekend and won at the invitational in Soldotna this past weekend– Girls took first and boys took 3rd. Photos by Coach B and Kyra and Regina.

34 IN YEARBOOK!: The yearbook staff has grown from 9 students in 2021 to 34 in 2024. That’s a lot of bodies and camera batteries! We hosted a training night at the football games on Friday 8/23 so new staffers could learn the processes of checking out cameras, setting up shots, where to stand, photography etiquette, and so much more. Here’s another reminder that a camera is not a hall pass or admission to an event– students should always have their press pass and some sort of Yearbook shirt or vest in order to photograph an event.
